The past five years have seen rapid growth in not only the popularity of smokeless cigarettes but in new products as well. This growth is only expected to continue and by 2017 is expected to reach upwards of $10 billion in annual sales. With growth and popularity comes factors that can seriously affect the future of smokeless cigarettes.
1. Marketing. Marketing will have a huge impact on smokeless cigarette sales. Manufacturers need to proceed with caution when creating their marketing plans and their web content because certain words and phrases should be avoided.
2. FDA rulings. The FDA and other governmental agencies are working to make decisions on how e-cigarettes should be regulated. FDA regulations began with classifying the devices like tobacco cigarettes. This led to regulating who can purchase smokeless cigarettes; as well as, regulating the production standards.
3. Industry concerns. If the FDA gets their wish and place restrictions on the sale of e-liquids, many vapers can find it hard to find their favorite e-liquid flavors on store shelves—this, however, looks unlikely to happen.
4. Public opinion. One of the largest hurdles to overcome is that of public opinion. As long as people still associate smokeless cigarettes with tobacco cigarettes—and the carcinogens that come from burning tobacco—there will continue to be people who fear e-cigarettes.
5. Restricting public use. Along with public concerns over their own safety while using smokeless cigarettes, the public still worries about any second-hand exposure to vapor. This is because many people do not understand how e-cigarettes work; thus, they don’t understand the extreme low risk of any second-hand exposure.
